Tiny Spiny...

20/8/2017

Picture
Sooooo small...This is my new Spiny Flower Mantis, it is in it's smallest size possible as it hatched out of the Oothaca not long ago. I can't tell if it is a male or a female yet. At the moment it is mimicking an ant as they don't usually get eaten. Quite a few insects do this. My fruit flies were too big for it to eat, so I had to go out and get a lunch buffet selection of tiny things from the garden. It gobbled them up and has now shed it's skin so is bigger. It is now savagely munching on the fruit flies. They have brilliant eyesight...in this picture it has just spotted something on the ceiling! He/she will change its colour and pattern dramatically as it grows, I will try to put more pictures on soon. These are possibly the prettiest mantids as an adult. No name yet, but all suggestions will be considered!
