Peruvian Black Beauty
​(Peruphasma schultei)

These dramatic looking stick insects come from a very small area in Peru. They were endangered but are now bred world-wide as a very handsome pet. They can run very fast. They have a beautiful black velvety bloom on their bodies, crazy yellow eyes and their feet are surprisingly soft.

​Fascinating fact: this species have tiny bright red wings that they flick up and display when they are on the move. This may startle a potential predator and give them time to run away...

Update: I have read a few scientific papers recently which suggest that they possibly can spray a chemical in self-defence. I have never experienced this but it's better to be safe than sorry so they are now retired...
