This is Saphira, she is an adorable little lizard who looks (and feels!) just like a crocodile. They also have striking red skin around their enormous brown eyes. I'm probably a bit biased but she is absolutely stunning. They originally come from Indonesia eg. islands like Papua New Guinea. Skinks like warm wet conditions and can be found hiding under logs or digging down into the soil. They eat all sorts of bugs and worms but in my experience are not very greedy. She absolutely loves her swimming pool and often floats in it like a little croc. Although she is friendly out of her cage she gets very cross if you try to do any jobs in her cage, like topping up water or cleaning or moving the furniture around...she growls like a tiny terrier and I have to try not to laugh and finish quickly! (She is basically defending her territory.)
Saphira is a little bit shy sometimes out of her cage but once she has met everyone she calms down a lot. Unlike all my other reptiles her skin is super tough and spikey and offers excellent protection against predators. I spent a very long time trying to find one as they are extremely rare. I couldn't decide which one to choose between her and her sister, but she winked at me and melted my heart... I searched through all the books, films and folk tales of the world to name her but only found one female dragon with a name. Bizarre!
Fascinating fact: Both male and female skinks guard the eggs and take care of the babies and are excellent parents, very unusual in the world of lizards!
